Track Notes – Mercy’s Crown
Mercy’s Crown was written in a moment of profound gravity, reflection, and prayer.
The song was born on a day marked by sudden loss, one that stirred deep sorrow and equally deep hope. As I processed what it means to finish well, my thoughts were drawn to the biblical imagery of crowns described in Scripture; not as symbols of human achievement, but as eternal rewards given by God to those who remain faithful, disciplined, and anchored in Christ through suffering and obedience.
Scripture speaks of multiple crowns: crowns of life, righteousness, rejoicing, glory, and imperishable reward. Together, they form a picture not of self-exaltation, but of lives fully surrendered to Christ. Mercy’s Crown reflects that truth. It is a meditation on what it means to lay down pride, striving, and self-reliance, and to live from a place where Christ reigns more fully as we fade.
The lyrics move intentionally through surrender, death to self, and resurrection hope. They are not focused on earthly endings, but on eternal perspective. The cross, the empty tomb, and the indwelling life of Christ shape the song’s center. It proclaims that death does not have the final word, that guilt and shame are broken, and that true life is found in union with the risen Son.
As a father, writing this song carried a particular weight. My hope is always that my children would be spared from witnessing tragedy and loss. And yet, in this moment, I found myself holding both grief and reverence at the same time; sorrow for what is lost, and awe at what Scripture describes as honor beyond this life. Those emotions coexist throughout the song, not resolved, but entrusted to God.
Mercy’s Crown is ultimately a declaration of faith. It affirms that when we die to ourselves, Christ reigns more clearly in us. That our peace is not found in control or outcomes, but in resting in His finished work. And that even in the face of death, the promise of resurrection, redemption, and eternal life remains unshaken.
This track is offered as worship, remembrance, and hope; anchored in Scripture, shaped by humility, and surrendered to the mercy of God alone.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Each day I lay my burdens down,
I trade my pride for mercy’s crown.
The cross reminds me I am His,
My only boast, His righteousness.
Pre-Chorus
Oh, I’m not perfect, I’m already gone,
In my weakness, He is strong
Chorus
I lay me down, down, down,
For mercy’s crown deep down.
The more I fade, He reigns,
Forever Christ remains.
Verse 2
The cross is where I’m laid to rest,
Grace has done what I have missed
Where striving ends, His love begins,
The Peace of God is where I live.
Bridge (lift / awakening)
The grave is not my ending,
It’s where His life begins.
The more I die, the more He reigns,
Forever Christ within.
The tomb is empty, I’m made new,
The blood has spoken, life breaks through.
No fear of death, no guilt, no shame,
I rise to life in Jesus’ name.
Chains are broken, I am free,
Christ in me, my victory.
From death to life, His love has won,
I live through Christ, the Risen Son.
The grave is not my ending,
It’s where His life begins.
The more I die, the more He reigns,
Forever Christ within.
Final Chorus (repeat big)
When I die, the more becomes,
The more I fade, the more He Loves.
His spirit leads, alive in me,
Rest in Peace, eternity.
